The Charcoal Ban Changed Everything

Deep in the heart of Bamba, Mariango and Chapungu — Kilifi County, Kenya — a community of hardworking men, women, and children — life quietly unravelled when the charcoal ban came into force.

For generations, families here had depended on charcoal production to survive. It fed their children. It paid school fees. It kept the lights on. Overnight, that source of income was gone.

But at Memsap Foundation, we refused to let despair win. We looked at the bare, scorched land and saw something different — we saw a future waiting to be planted.

That is why we are launching the Bamba–Mariango–Chapungu Reforestation Programme — a community-driven movement to restore the forests, restore the incomes, feed the children, and rebuild hope from the ground up.

The Root Cause

As drought strips the land bare and forests disappear, elephants lose their natural habitat and food. Desperate and hungry, they march straight into the farms of our communities — destroying in one night what families worked months to grow.

The charcoal ban took away income. The drought took away the rain. Now elephants take away the food. Our communities are being hit from every direction.
